It's about time...

Everyone knows that I am a journalism major. I subscribe to all things media related and I came across this little story today in my email inbox.

"Ebony pushes for a new edge"

All I can say is, thank God. I always thought Ebony had so much potential. I believe Ebony has fallen off in recent years. The quality of writing has gone down, and it reads like a fifth-grader wrote the cover stories. They rarely cover anything of much importance and their interviews with celebrities just rehash information that's common knowledge to anyone with a TV or high-speed internet.

Not to say that Ebony hasn't made some good moves. That recent Barack Obama cover was a good look. So was this one a few years ago:

Also, did you see that American Greetings partnered with Ebony to create cards based on some of their most famous covers? You can check out the pictures
here . Be sure to scroll all the way down to the bottom.

This is great to hear. I hope Ebony and Essence survive the down-turn of all the print mags, but they've gotta let some other voices in there besides the pro-choice, straght-and-always-Democratic ticket punching black folks.

Case in point: Essence printed an anonymous article about a woman who goes off on vacation and sleeps with other men then comes home and hides it all from her husband.

If this is the kind of direction they are headed, I say good riddance! But I pray it's not.

The cover photo of Barack and Michelle Obama did make me do a double take in Target the other day!

God love the African-American publications...

Definitely good news to hear, I hope they seriously follow through on stepping up their game.

I like supporting 'black' things, but what's always annoyed me is the volume of advertising in magazines. Yes, I know they are out to make money, and advertising is probably 60% (if not more) of their business, but...

I want to be able to read a magazine, with 'true' articles, i.e. more articles than 'junk / spam', if you will...

So, all that being said, I look forward to the changes. Now, if O (Oprah's magazine) would do the same, we'd be in business...
